Annual Delia Gray Awards Gala on November 16th, 2007.An evening spent remembering the great Delia Gray with the Annual Delia Gray Awards Gala, with scholarships in her name and others who have paved the way for the Metis people in Alberta. President Audrey Poitras openend the evening, with the background of Delia Gray and her family. This was a cinderella evening for me, I never in my lifetime ever thought of receiving this award. It was a very sucessfully kept secret from me right up until my name was called as the first recipient. The whole evening was wonderful; I enjoyed watching the scholarships being given out and learning more about Delia Gray. The whole concept of receiving this great honor was just inconceivable to me. To be placed with women who I have always honored and revered, was the greatest honor I could ever have bestowed upon me. Someone said to me, that in the nearly thirty years of our friendship, they have never known a time when I was not proudly carrying the Métis flag, fighting for our Métis rights, and helping others to get to know us a Métis people, and helping always helping. My reply was that I only do what is needed. His reply was, "that's why you are considered a Matriarch of the Métis People"
I am so grateful for this wonderful honor, and will always remain a PROUD METIS. And when I hear things like the Métis National Anthem, I have a honored tear in my eye for those before us, and those who come after us; A tear of pride.
